Provincial Examination Guidelines
Optional Grade 12 Provincial Examinations
Other than Language Arts 12 and BC First Nations 12, students have the option of taking the Provincial examinations related to specific Grade 12 courses. Full credit may be earned for these courses whether or not the related Provincial examination is taken. If students choose to write these exams, results will count for 40% of the final course mark.
Registration for Optional Grade 12 Provincial Exams
Students who register for an optional Provincial exam but who do not attend the Provincial exam sitting will receive their school mark as their final mark for the course.
Students who register for an optional Provincial exam and who sign in on the day of the Provincial exam, regardless of whether they answer any of the questions, will be considered to have made an exam attempt. This attempt will count for 40% of the student’s final letter grade for the course.
Grade 12 Graduation Program Exam Scholarships
Provincial scholarships are awarded based on provincial exam results from the best three exam scores, with a minimum of 86% for each examination (except Communications 12). A student must achieve at least a “B” in Language Arts 12.
Post Secondary Admission
Admission requirements to various universities may be different. UBC and Simon Fraser, for example, require sudents to write provincial exams for admission purposes. UVIC and UNBC, however, only require the English 12 provincial to be written. These universities will consider the higher mark of the blended exam / classroom mark, or the classroom mark. Consult the Career Centre, Student Services Counsellor or an Administrator for details since these requirements vary by province and institution.
Time Limits
English or Communications 12 must be written within three years of completing the course. Similarly, if a student later elects to write an exam previously opted out of, it must be written within three years of taking the course.
Provincial Exam Rewrites
You may rewrite a provincial exam once within the 12-month period following the first attempt at the examination. The Ministry will use whichever exam result is higher and blend it with your school mark.
Retaking a Course
If you retake a course and you are satisfied with your previous exam mark, you do not have to rewrite the provincial exam (providing you retake the course within twelve months of writing the exam the first time).
